1955: Al Hepburn and The Houndogs – that was the first band where I got paid money to play. Our (few) gigs were playing for the Sunday Night Jamboree at the Thornhill Farmers Market. We each got paid $2.00 for the night.
In the above photo, I am playing a tenor sax. This would be an instrument I borrowed from high school as I did not own one at that time. The Sunday Night Jamborees were mainly about Country music so when we got on the stage and played Rock n Roll, I think some of the audience may have not been ready for that.
The Celsie Brothers, Art and Don, started the Jamboree in Thornhill. Don is still with us, living in Orillia.
